If your home or basement was flooded or damp for an extended period of time, bacteria and mold that cause illness and cancer may be growing. New research indicates that drying the space out may not be enough to eliminate the disease-carrying pathogens. After a series of weather-related natural disasters, including hurricane Katrina, many structures from homes to businesses were no longer habitable due to the growth of mold and bacteria caused by flooding.
Researchers began exploring ways to rid environments of human pathogens to make them livable after they have been contaminated with bacteria, viruses and other human pathogens. Historically, pesticides and chemicals were used. However, chemicals must reach the pathogen to kill and some pesticides and chemicals can be deadly to humans and harmful to the ecosystem. When the structure is contaminated in the walls and crevices, this is nearly impossible to achieve.
